SK Telecom Unveils 15GW AI Data-Center Master Plan, Positioning South Korea as Asia’s Next AI Infrastructure Hub

Summary :

SK Telecom on July 5 disclosed a long-horizon plan to develop up to 15 gigawatts of AI computing capacity on Korean soil — a scale the operator described as roughly the combined output of the country’s twenty largest thermal plants. The opening 5GW tranche is broken into a 2GW cluster in Ulsan/Gyeongsang and a 1GW campus in Jeolla, with phased power-on beginning in 2029. Each gigawatt of capacity is expected to draw on the order of KRW 70 trillion in total capital, implying multi-decade commitments for land, grid, cooling and NVIDIA-class silicon. Chief Executive Jung Jai-hun placed the initiative in a national-strategy frame, arguing that after the 1968 Gyeongbu Expressway and the late-1990s broadband rollout, sovereign AI compute is the third infrastructure
wave that will decide Korea’s next 30 years. Existing partnerships with NVIDIA and AWS are expected to anchor early tenant demand, while SK Group affiliates in memory, energy and materials will supply the vertical stack.
