Amazon Leo Passes 390 Satellites With Final Atlas V 551 Flight; Consumer Service On Track for 2026

The 18-ton payload tied the Atlas V’s all-time heaviest lift and marked the final flight of the 551 configuration, closing a 24-year chapter for the workhorse booster. Amazon confirmed the mission, listed internally as LA-08, was the eighth Atlas V flight for the constellation, which is authorized by the FCC to reach 3,200+ satellites. CEO Dave Limp reiterated that initial commercial Leo internet service will launch to consumers later in 2026, with New Glenn expected to resume flights by year-end after its engine-section investigation. The company’s low-Earth-orbit push is designed to challenge SpaceX’s Starlink, which currently operates roughly 11,000 satellites.

Why Selected:

First hard signal that Amazon’s Kuiper/Leo consumer service will hit 2026 — the constellation is now big enough for FCC-mandated milestones.
